The Little Comforts That Make Solo Travel Feel Like Home

Solo travel is one of the most freeing experiences I’ve had, but let’s be honest: stepping into the unknown, especially alone, can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. Over the years, I’ve learned that adding little comforts into my routine can make all the difference. They help ground me, keep me at ease, and ensure I’m not only enjoying the adventure, but also taking care of my well-being along the way. Here are some of the personal things I do to make solo travel feel like home:

Starting the Day with Coffee

Coffee is a must to start my day, whether I’m at home or traveling. At home, I always begin my morning with a cup of coffee, so when I travel, I make sure to keep that same routine. I ensure my accommodations are within walking distance to a coffee shop or café. Of course, if I’m staying at an all-inclusive resort, coffee is readily available, but for hotels and Airbnb's, it’s essential that I can get up, step outside, and take a walk to get my coffee. There’s something so peaceful about starting the day with a leisurely stroll and taking in the beauty of where I am. Whether it’s a local café or a favorite chain, that morning coffee sets the tone for a productive and peaceful day ahead.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to get your coffee, use apps like Yelp or Google Maps to find nearby cafes or local spots to explore. Starting your day with a walk to a nearby coffee shop is a great way to discover a new part of the neighborhood.

Starting My Day with Prayer, Meditation, and a Good Book

No matter where I am in the world, my mornings begin with prayer and meditation—it’s my way of centering myself and finding peace before the day begins. Recently, I’ve fallen in love with the healing sounds of Londrelle and now incorporate his chakra meditations into my routine (shoutout to my little sister for introducing me!).

Another way I bring a sense of home with me is by continuing to read a self-help book I started before my trip. Whether it’s a book that inspires growth, offers guidance, or uplifts my spirit, it’s comforting to dive back into familiar pages while in a new environment. It’s a little piece of home that keeps me grounded and motivated as I explore the world.

Tip: Pack a self-help book you’re already reading or start a new one before your trip so it feels like an ongoing journey you can carry with you wherever you go. Pair your morning routine with healing music or soothing sounds to help create a calming and uplifting atmosphere, no matter where you are.

Bringing My Favorite Scents Along

Scent is incredibly important to me. I always pack my favorite lotion because let’s be real, the power of scent is amazing. It’s not just about keeping my skin moisturized; it’s about calming my spirit. The familiar smell of my lotion throughout the day helps me feel grounded and at ease, no matter where I am. That said, I’m mindful of the lotions and perfumes I choose—especially in tropical or outdoor areas—because I’m not trying to attract any bugs! I opt for scents that are soothing, but also avoid anything too floral or sweet that might attract unwanted attention from insects. The right scent can transform your day and help you feel more connected to yourself and your surroundings.

Tip: Find a scent that helps you feel calm and at peace, while being mindful of your environment. Some essential oils can also double as a natural bug repellent, so consider bringing a travel-friendly bottle with you.

Where I Stay: Safety and Comfort Matter

Where I stay is extremely important to me—not just for safety reasons, but for my comfort and peace of mind. Sometimes, getting to sleep in a new place can be tricky, but having accommodations that are cozy and comfortable makes a world of a difference. I’m all about booking places that feel safe and welcoming, whether that’s an Airbnb with homey touches or a hotel with a welcoming atmosphere. I also make sure my accommodations are in a secure area so I can fully enjoy my trip without worrying about my safety.

Tip: When booking your accommodations, consider both safety and comfort. Read reviews to get a sense of the area and pay attention to details like security features or neighborhood vibe.

Comfort Items: My Pillowcase and Sheets

This might sound a little extra but hear me out. I always bring my own pillowcase and bed sheets when I travel solo. Let’s face it: germs and dirt are everywhere, but that will never stop me from exploring. Bringing my own pillowcase and sheets makes me feel cleaner, and the familiar smells of home make falling asleep that much easier. After a long day of exploring, there's nothing like crawling into bed with the comfort of your own sheets and the peace of mind that you're getting a restful night’s sleep.

Tip: Bring small items from home that make your stay feel more personal, like a pillowcase, blanket, or anything else that helps you feel at ease.

Staying Connected with Family (For Their Peace of Mind)

As freeing and liberating as solo travel is, I know there are people back home who worry about me. Staying in contact with family is not only for my benefit, but also for their peace of mind. Calling, texting, and staying active on social media are great ways to stay in touch and let them know I’m okay, even if service is spotty. I also enjoy showcasing the beauty of the places I’m visiting, so my family can experience the journey with me, even from a distance. It’s a nice balance between staying connected and staying present in my travels.

Tip: Set a routine for staying in touch with loved ones—whether it’s through phone calls, messages, or social media posts. It helps keep them updated and reassured, while also sharing the beauty of your journey.

Being Present in the Moment

While staying connected is important, I’ve learned that solo travel is also a time for reflection, introspection, and being present. There’s a temptation to document every moment for social media, but I make sure to take time to pause, breathe, and truly experience where I am. I focus on the smells, the sounds, and the sights of the place I’m visiting, taking it all in without the pressure of capturing everything on camera. It’s about creating memories for myself, not just for my audience.

Tip: Allow yourself to fully experience the destination without distractions. Take a moment to absorb everything around you and give yourself the space to reflect and enjoy the “me time.”

Final Thoughts

Solo travel doesn’t have to mean feeling disconnected or uncomfortable. By incorporating these little comforts into my routine, I’ve learned how to feel at home, no matter where I am. Whether it’s my morning coffee, my calming meditations, or the familiar scent of my lotion, these small rituals help me stay grounded, safe, and at peace. Solo travel is about embracing the adventure, but it’s also about taking care of yourself along the way. What will you bring on your solo adventure?
